Got Purpose? Know Yours!

September 3rd, 2017 admin

When a  person doesn’t have any understanding of their God given purpose, it is easy to get caught up in a way of life that they may have never intended on living.  Here’s why…Aaaaand we’re back! Welcome one mo’ gain to “piecebyPeace”. Is anybody familiar with the author James Allen?  He was a British philosophical writer and is widely known for his inspirational books and poetry.  Allen is also considered a pioneer of the self-help movement. His best known work “As a Man Thinketh” has been mass-produced since its publication in 1903.

I’ve read this book twice over the past 7-8 years and I just recently picked it up again. If you have never read it I’d like to suggest for you to do so.  It’s a very good read.  While the reading the fourth chapter entitled “Thought and Purpose”, I felt like I needed to revisit what Paul talks about as being the “old manner of life”.  Allen says,“They who have no central purpose in their life fall an easy prey to petty worries, fears, troubles, and self-pitying, all of which lead, just as deliberately planned sins (though by a different route), to failure, unhappiness, and loss, for weakness cannot persist in a power evolving universe.”  It is so important for us to know why we exist.  If you do know, it is most assuredly important to not forget why you do, and to not live in a way that does not correspond with the reason of why you’re here.

Remember Paul says in Ephesians 4:17, “Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.” The actual meaning for the word “futility” in this verse literally translates to mean vanity, emptiness; aimlessness due to lacking purpose or any meaningful end. Allen points out that whether a person is practicing sin willfully or is just scared with no hope—both trains of thought have the same effect on a person’s life – failure and loss.

I could go into a deep theological discourse on why God created us, which has so many facets to.  However, I won’t. For this post, there are two verses that come to mind.  “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them”, Ephesians 2:10 and “Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made”, Isaiah 43:7.   To state it simply—God has created us for His glory and good works, by us living in Jesus Christ. When a  person doesn’t have any understanding of their God given purpose, it is easy to get caught up in a way of life that they may have never intended on living. They may do what Paul says not to do, walk as the Gentiles walked, meaning living life in a practice of sin.  Even if they don’t start out that way, they may not have a mind of peace because they’re worried about what life holds. They are unsure of who they are and why they are living. They may even turn to a life where sin as a hiding place because they feel they have nowhere else to turn.

James Allen’s wife said this about him: “He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing; but he wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it out in his own life, and knew that it was good. Thus he wrote facts, which he had proven by practice.” When I read that about Allen, I had to reflect on my life and ask God to help me not to forget why He has put me here, so may walk out every bit of the purpose that He has for my life. I do not want to go back to a life of ferocious fear and sickening sin.  Every post I write on piecebyPeace I want people to be able to say of me what Allen’s wife said about him.  My prayer is for God to do these very things in me.  I also pray that if you do not know what work God has for you, the work that will bring Him glory, that your heart and mind will be open to receiving whatever it is, so you will not live a futile life.

God, I pray for every person reading this post that they will have clarity concerning the plan you have for their life. If they don’t know, tell them. If they have refused it, I pray for conviction, repentance and surrender. If they do know but need more of You to continue or more understanding and direction, give it to them. If they have not given You their life I pray for them to not withhold themselves from You any longer or grieve Your Spirit. Don’t let anyone reading this post not hear in the end, “Well done my faithful servant”.  In Jesus name Amen.
