New Clothes for the New (Wo)Man Pt. 1
When you mature in your Christian walk, your tastes change. Read more…
Hey guys! I hope everyone is doing well. We are into the New Year and things are beginning to pick up for so many people. New beginnings, new experiences and new opportunities are on the horizon for so many people and I am excited about it. All of this newness causes me to chant my new mantra for this year. New mind! New me! New life! No excuses! No matter what! Let’s go! Let’s get it! Trust me. I am choosing to daily walk that thang out. It makes such a difference in life. I question myself often as to why it took me so long to allow God to work this in me. It makes life so much more enjoyable. God is restoring me and it such a beautiful thing. I love the woman that I am and I love even more the woman that He is continuously fashioning me into. So now that there is a new me in the making, I need new clothes.
I don’t believe this applies only to me, but you know how when you feel like you need to feel different, you want to buy something new to wear. When you begin to think you need to look brand new, you go buy some brand new clothes. Ladies, we will go buy that new dress and new pair of heels. We will get our hair tossed and stop by the MAC counter to complete our new look. Fella’s, y’all will go get that new suite, some tight new shoes with some off the chain cuff links and a tie, or bowtie for some depending on taste. And of course we can’t forget the fresh cut and shave. Of course it doesn’t stop there. Ladies and fella’s, y’all know that our walk is little different too. Ladies that switch is a little more exaggerated. And fella’s, that stroll is a bit mo’ smooth. Hahahahahaha!
Likewise it is the same with our spiritual wardrobe. When we change the way we think by taking on the mind of Christ we begin to look different, act different and carry ourselves differently. Why? Because we are different! This means we need new clothes in the Spirit. So what are those clothing items? Let’s just say we need a whole new wardrobe and God is happy to give it to us!
The passage of scripture we’ve been unpacking since we’ve begin this journey together is Ephesians 4:22-24, “Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness,” as we have been discovering, describes this whole process.
Thus far we’ve been renewing our minds and we have seen that it causes us to be transformed. When we are transformed we have become the “new self” that Paul is talking about. How does that look you say? Glad you asked. The “new self” incorporates your clothing choices. What you choose to put on is determined by what you choose to think.
When we have the thoughts of Christ we desire to wear attire that is fitting to our spiritual palate. Romans 13:14 says, “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” Jesus Christ is the “new self” and His wardrobe, the attributes of who He is, becomes our wardrobe when we come into relationship with Him. He finely dresses us to look like Him. We don’t desire anything outside of Him. When you mature in your Christian walk, your tastes change. It’s just like when you mature as an adult your taste in what you wear changes as well. Even your desire for the scents you wear will change. I know for me, when I was teenager I used to mostly shop in the little cute stores that teenage girls shop at. Or when I wanted some perfume I would quickly go to a Bath and Body Works to buy some “smell good.” But my tastes have changed. Let me also just say that there is nothing wrong with Bath and Body Works scents. I still like them. It’s just that I now prefer other scents that one would buy in a department store instead. My tastes have just changed.
Jesus Christ is not only our Savior, Big Brother and Friend, He is also our stylist with a personal assistant by the name of Holy Spirit. You know you have a bomb big brother or big sister when you can look up to them and want to dress and look them. They’ll even take you shopping not minding spending a dime on you. We’ll that’s what we have in Jesus. He’s already paid for it with His sacrifice. He is all that and so much more. Let Him dress you. I promise you will look great because He is beautiful! Until then take some time and meditate on the song “Beautiful Jesus”. Love you guys! Peace and God’s abundant Blessings.
